9:30 am: Gathering and sign-in of registrants

10:00 am – 12:00 pm: CMHC presents the EQuilibrium™ Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative

EQuilibrium™ is a national Sustainable Housing Demonstration initiative, led by CMHC, that brings the private and public sectors together to develop homes that combine resource- and energy-efficient technologies with renewable energy technologies in order to reduce their environmental impact.

EQuilibrium™ housing integrates a wide range of technologies, strategies, products and techniques to reduce a home's environmental impact to a minimum. EQuilibrium™ housing features on-site renewable energy systems to provide clean energy to help reduce annual consumption and costs. Photovoltaic panels on the house generate electricity. Other renewable energy systems, such as solar hot water and geothermal energy systems, can also be used to produce reliable, low-cost, environmentally friendly energy.

The result is a highly energy-efficient grid connected home with low environmental impact that aims to produce as much energy each year as it consumes in the form of heat, light and power.

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch (provided) and meet & greet opportunity.

1:00 pm – 3:30 pm: Tim Krahn (P. Eng.) and / or Kris Dick of the University of Manitoba Alternative Village present a seminar on sustainable building techniques, using alternative materials and alternative energy. They will showcase initiatives and research underway at the Alternative Village on campus, and will discuss the concept of the "carbon footprint" and present methods for reducing our own personal carbon footprints while maintaining a high quality of life.
